Chapter Seven

Northbridge Hospital.

When Conor woke up in the cabin on Friday morning, the last thing he’d expected was to be sitting in the emergency room’s waiting area by sundown.

But there he was. The end of an eventful thirteen hours.

After five straight days of blizzard, Friday had dawned with a clear sky and sunshine that hadn’t helped the frigid temperature. But as usual the first thing Conor had done was leave the cabin in search of cell service.

He had managed to find that slightly closer than usual, though, only to learn that Declan’s condition was the same.

Then he’d called Rickie.

His old friend had had better news for him—the rockslide blocking the road into and out of town had been cleared.

“I’m right here with my truck,” Rickie had told him. “I don’t know what the road’s like—technically it’s still closed between here and Billings. But the snowplow is headed out to start clearing from this end. If I follow behind I might be able to make it far enough to get to you.”

Since his friend was willing to try, Conor had agreed to search for cell service every two hours to check in with him for a progress report. Then Conor had returned to the cabin to tell Maicy they might be getting out today.

That had set them both into motion, packing and cleaning and doing what was necessary to shut the rustic shelter down, with Conor hiking out as scheduled to check in with Rickie.

At nearly four that afternoon, Rickie had made it to the foot of the road leading to the cabin.

With that news, Conor had returned to the cabin to outfit Maicy with snowshoes. He’d done a final check to be sure the place was left the way they’d found it—minus the supplies they’d tallied on their list—and then the two of them headed out, with Conor toting his duffel and Maicy’s suitcase—minus the ruined wedding dress that was too bulky to pack and so had been left behind.

But when they’d reached the highway and Rickie’s truck, Rickie wasn’t with it. Instead he called to them from the pile of snow that was covering Maicy’s car like a huge dome.

While he’d been waiting for them to get to him, Rickie had started to dig out Maicy’s car. In the course of that he’d lost his footing, fallen and broken his leg.

And once more Conor had been grateful for his field training.

While Maicy had searched the truck for anything he could use for makeshift medical supplies, Conor had stabilized the leg and splinted it with the two planks of wood and bungee cords she found for him.

Then Maicy had come up with the idea of using a ramp she’d found in the truck bed as a stretcher and a plastic tarp as a sheet. Between the two of them they’d cocooned Rickie with the tarp and gotten him onto the ramp so Conor could drag him to the truck and then hoist his pain-ridden old friend inside.

It had
